Success Stories

These are just a few of the many stories of how the Pet Assistance Program is helping dogs and cats in our community. Funds raised for this program help provide these animals better living conditions, necessary medical care and free spay and neutering.

From "Killer" to "Kay-lei"

From giving birth on a chain here...

To now being a loved housepet! (shown above with her new mom and dad)

Our volunteers were out doing outreach one day when they came upon this beautiful dog then paradoxically referred to as "Killer" with 7 brand new puppies down in a dirt hole. She had given birth on the end of her chain. The volunteers spoke with the owners and this was this dog's third litter! The owners told them that something always happened to the puppies, they never survived.

The owners decided that they would try to fit the puppies into a rescue that would bottle-feed them. As soon as mom's milk dried up, we transported her into our clinic to get her spayed. She was such an adorable dog, yet she lived her life on the end of a chain.

Everyone at the clinic fell in love with her and we talked with the owners about getting mom into a rescue group as well and giving her a chance to live as an inside pet. They agreed and she has since been renamed "Kay-lei: and is now living a cushy life where she is very spoiled and loved!

No More Puppies For Me!
A volunteer was out canvassing an area in September and saw this Husky chained to her dog house. She remembered giving this dog hay in the winter and also remembered 2 bigger puppies with her. The owner wasn't home, so the volunteer put a spay voucher in her door with a note on it. The owner called the next day and was so happy to have gotten the voucher. We scheduled her dog, Bandit, for her spay surgery and vaccinations.
When we went to pick up Bandit for her (the woman was an older woman and didn't drive), she told us that Bandit had had three litters of puppies and that she had wanted to get her spayed but could never find anyone willing to handle her and put her in their vehicle to get her to a clinic. Bandit is a little aloof, but our volunteers got her loaded up, transported to the clinic, she was spayed, vaccinated and overnighted to recover. Our volunteers took her back home the next day and the owner and Bandit were very happy and very appreciative. No more babies for this beautiful girl!

Misty & Rocky
Misty and Rocky are 2 dogs found in the Kansas City area who's legs were severed. SNKC was contacted to help these dogs with medical expenses and care so they could find new and loving homes.

Because of the support of many caring people, SNKC was able to cover their medical expenses. Both dogs are on their way to finding new and loving homes! Thank you for all those who made contributions on their half.

Literally Out of Control!
This pet owner failed to spay and neuter his pet and ended up with an unwanted litter. He was also unable to provide these animals with adequate shelter. All puppies were spayed and neutered and transferred into a rescue group out of state.
Mom was spayed for free and given new doghouse!

Dog Nearly Starved to Death
The pet assistance program worked very closely with this pet owner who received substantial assistance for her pets and family. During follow up visits, this dog appeared to be starving and the pet owners neglected to take in for veterinary care. Dog has been pulled from situation and is now in a loving foster care home.

The $10 Puppy

This little puppy was with some kids on a street corner in KCMO. A good Samaritan asked if she could have the puppy. The kids sold it to her for $10 and she took into her home. She was very worried the kids would harm the puppy. However, she had too many animals and asked a volunteer to find it a home. The puppy is in a new a loving home!

Me Neglected?
Can you believe this dog was neglected? Owner had 2 dogs, inadequate housing and the dogs were very depressed. Several appointments were made for a free spay and neuter but the owners never showed. We ended up going to pick the dogs up for the spay/neuter and brought into the clinic. Eventually this baby was turned over to Kate and is in a foster home. Unfortunately the other dog ran away and we pray he is in a better home.

Released From Life On A Chain!
This sweet dog lived his entire life on a chain! He was turned over and found a loving new home!

These are some photos of what our volunteers see when working in the communities in need. These animals have all received assistance from our program and most have been spayed or neutered! Thank you to our volunteer team!

The SNKC Pet Assistance Program is our outreach program supported by volunteers who provide basic pet necessities, spay and neuter information and education to pet owners in need.

This program is reaching into areas of our community that receive a higher number of animal control calls for neglect, abuse and stray pets. This program is successfully gaining trust in these communities which enables us to increase responsible pet ownership.

This program is our only contact with many pet owners and is vital to the success of decreasing pet overpopulation and helping so many animals in need.

We need your support to continue this program. If you cannot volunteer, please consider making a donation to help pets in these communities with basic necessities, veterinary care, spay and neutering and food.

We are in need of the items listed below. Once collected, these items will be distributed to needy animals this summer.

Wish List:

  • New or used dog houses in good condition

  • New or gently used medium to large size crates (these are used to encourage pet owners to bring their pets inside, at least for the extremely hot days and to help with house training so that their animals can become indoor pets)

  • Bales of hay for bedding

  • Fly, Flea and Tick Repellent

  • Dog and Cat food

  • Treats and rawhide chews

  • Large water buckets with handles

  • Clips to attach water buckets to prevent them from spilling

  • Monetary donations to purchase additional items

  • Funds to help with spay and neutering

Items may be dropped off at 3710 Main Street, Kansas City MO 64111, Mon-Fri. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monetary donations can be mailed to: Spay/Neuter KC, PO Box 410303, KCMO 64141. Please include a note with your donation designating it to: The Summer Assistance Program For Pets. Credit card donations are accepted through our website.
