Pet Assistance Program

The SNKC Pet Assistance Program is an outreach program formed to help improve the lives of animals in need through education and available resources.

Many pet owners call our organization for assistance every day. Thousands of animals are spayed and neutered annually through SNKC. However, it is the pet owners who do not call us that concerns us the most.

The Pet Assistance Program is reaching areas of our community that receive a higher number of animal control calls for neglect, abuse and stray pets. This program is successfully gaining trust in these communities and promoting responsible pet ownership which helps improve the lives of animal in most need.

Through this program, animals are provided basic necessities pet owners might not otherwise be able to afford. Many pets receive new or improved dog houses, dog/cat food, new collars, flea/tick prevention, toys, treats and some special medical assistance. Many of the dogs and cats are scheduled for a free spay or neuter. Spay and neuters that would not have happened without the encouragement and efforts of our volunteer team.

It is difficult to imagine, but many of these pets live in less then desirable conditions. Many meet only minimal standards according to animal control ordinances. Our only hope for these animals is to provide pet owners with information on responsible pet ownership and assist them with basic needs. On some occasions, we have find it necessary to immediately report signs of abuse and neglect to animal control.

This program is vital to our community to help the animals in most need, animals at highest risk of contributing to pet overpopulation and those with suffering for a lack of proper living conditions.

Our shelters are full of unwanted pets, thousands are etherized each year, the only hope for many of these pets is educating their pet owners. By doing so we help promote responsible pet ownership, improve animal welfare in our communities and decrease the number of animals impounded to only face certain death.

How you can help

Volunteer
We are in need of more volunteers to help; however this program is not for everyone. The group travels to some of the poorest areas of Kansas City to help animals in most need. The living conditions of these animals are less then desirable. For the most part, pet owners are very cooperative and receptive of our efforts to help but for safety reasons, the groups work in teams.

For many volunteers this can be both a depressing yet rewarding experience. It is difficult to imagine the daily lives of most of the animals in need until you have visited these areas first hand. However, these animals need your help. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Kate Quigley, Program Coordinator.

Donate

This outreach program is the only program in Kansas City providing this type of commitment and service to a large number of dogs and cats on a regular basis. It is a program that is much needed in our community and hope you find it in your heart to help support our efforts. Our hopes are to work more closely with animal control to form a stronger partnership and decrease the number of animals impounded.
