About Us
Spay Neuter Kansas City

Spay and Neuter Kansas City (“SNKC”) is a 501c3 organization, formed in 2002. It works closely with private practice veterinarians dedicated to the concept of providing low-cost spay and neuter services for those with financial need. SNKC does not provide subsidized surgery to those who can readily afford such services, nor does it expect private veterinarians to provide services free of charge. SNKC raises funds to pay private veterinarians for surgery for pet owners who otherwise could not afford to have their pets neutered.

VETERINARY REFERRAL PROGRAM
SNKC’s primary function is to refer pet owners in need of spay and neuter services to our participating veterinarians. Our veterinarians perform the surgery at their clinics and are paid by SNKC or by a combination of SNKC and the pet owner.

Pet owners who call our organization and have an established veterinary relationship are directed to call that veterinarian. Owners who are not in financial need are referred by SNKC to private veterinarians. By doing so, SNKC drives the pet owners who can afford to pay to the private veterinarians. This preserves SNKC’s limited resources for clients truly in financial need, stops abuse of our program, and drives the paying business to the private vets.

MASH CLINICS
Once a month SNKC hosts a mass sterilization clinic at 3710 Main Street, where over 100 dog/cat spays and neuters are preformed in a single day. This is accomplished by the efforts of a coalition that includes University of Missouri Veterinary School faculty and students, SNKC staff, many volunteers and several private veterinarians.

Most of the surgeries performed at these clinics are from our targeted areas and are for pet owners who cannot afford to pay anything. We are always in need of more participating veterinarians and will compensate veterinarians for a day’s work but many volunteer their services to help with this community effort.

RABIES CLINICS
Once a month SNKC hosts a drive-through rabies vaccination clinic in our targeted area. Rabies vaccinations are provided at discounted prices. All pet owners must purchase a city license and are educated on the importance of spay/neuter services. KCMO City Licensing an altered pet is only $12 versus $35 for an unaltered pet. Pet owners who license an unaltered pet are given a spay/neuter voucher that day and automatically scheduled at one of our upcoming MASH clinics. There is no additional charge for that client to have their pet spayed or neutered.

PIT BULL ALLIANCE
SNKC has is a partner with the Pit Bull Alliance Group. An association of local animal welfare organizations and concerned individuals working together to address the over-population of bully breed dogs in the greater Kansas City area and to mitigate the negative image associated with bully breeds through training and education.

HOMELESS PETS & PEOPLE PROGRAM
SNKC works with Uplift, a non profit organization who's goal is to deliver to the homeless those basic human needs, care and compassion that are not usually received from other organizations.

Uplift volunteers work with the homeless who are caring for pets to educate them on spay and neutering and basic veterinary care. SNKC provides free spay and neuter services for pets from any homeless individual in the Greater Kansas City area. The volunteers bring those animals to our monthly MASH clinics where each pet is vaccinated, spayed and neutered and given any necessary basic veterinary care before being returned to that individual.

If you would like more information on Uplift, to donate or for volunteer opportunities with this organization contact them at 816-589-2452.

School Education Voucher Program
SNKC has partnered with Wayside Waifs to provide spay and neuter vouchers to the classrooms Wayside Waifs visits. Representatives collect these vouchers and assist pet owners in need to get their pets spayed and neutered.

Unwanted Litter Intervention Program

In working with our clients, we find many pet owners with unwanted litters. Many of these pet owner's relinquish these litters to an already overcrowded shelter. Some are willing to find homes for these litters. We are able to provide spay and neuter assistance to the parent(s) of these litters, but due to our restrictions on limiting our funding to pets that are owned we are unable to assist these pet owners with spay and neutering of the littermates.

Spay and neutering the parents of these litters is only part of the solution. Preventing the offspring from reproducing must be addressed as well. Giving away these litters unaltered will not address the problem unless the pets are spayed and neutered.

If our organization was able to assist pet owners who were willing to find homes for these pets versus relinquishing them to a shelter we would be able to provide solutions to this problem in two ways. If we could provide free spay and neutering for the litters and educate the pet owners in finding good homes for these pets we would not only decrease pet overpopulation, but would prevent the litters from entering the shelter to most likely face certain death.

SNKC is currently seeking funding for this program. Funds would be used to provide free spay and neuters to litters that would be given away to new homes. If you are interested in supporting this program, please mail donations to:

Spay and Neuter Program Training Center

Spay and Neuter Kansas City offers tours and training opportunities for organizations interested in starting a spay and neuter program in their community. This program offers:

  • Tour of clinic
  • Background on organization
  • Basic operations of clinic: administration, screening protocol, and clinic procedures.
  • Veterinarian Networking - We offer advice on getting veterinarians involved in your community.
  • A sample list of supplies and equipment necessary to get started.
  • Working with animal control departments. We work with animal control departments that do not spay and neuter before adoption to change policy and ensure all adopted pets are spayed and neutered prior adoption.

Give us a call or email if you have any questions regarding starting a spay and neuter program. We are happy to assist any group and share resources necessary to help make your program a success!
